ChromaTuner is an iPhone app which provides the most accurate yet simple tool available for its single specific task: tuning musical instruments. It was designed by a musician for musicians, and embeds FMOD, the venerable successful and well-tested audio engine used in video game scores. It is designed with the same functionality found in physical chromatic tuners which cost a great deal more than ChromaTuner.

Details

Most iPhone tuners suffer from common problems:

  1. They consistently report inaccurate pitches;
  2. They provide extra features to confuse the user interface;
  3. The recording sensitivity is very poor particularly with high and low frequency sounds;
  4. They are usually unable to detect the root tonality when analyzing chords and harmonies.

To resolve these issues, ChromaTuner performs spectrum analysis using an FFT algorithm developed specifically for iPhone and the heavy compression and close proximity characteristics of its built-in mic. The app does its best to isolate the fundamental from its overtones and present it through a simple single-screen interface.

Features

  • Employs spectrum analysis using FMOD, the C/C++ audio engine used for high-end video game audio
  • Provides three modes: Chromatic/Auto mode, Manual/Note mode, and Guitar mode
  • Provides a tuning fork feature which plays audio tones for all pitches
  • Offers a simple easy-to-use interface which resembles traditional hardware chromatic tuners
  • Enables a calibration range of 20 hz to modify A4 from 430hz to 450hz, with standard being 440hz
  • Remembers settings between uses
  • Eliminates all extra non-essential features!
